Why formulas change

Reading the label
There is no fixed lifespan for every lip oil. An unopened product generally lasts longer because the seal reduces routine exposure, while an opened tube begins its period-after-opening countdown and receives repeated applicator contact.

An open-jar symbol marked 6M, 12M, or 24M means the product is recommended for that many months after opening. It does not override visible deterioration or contamination; replace the product sooner when something changes.
Warning signs
Temperature can temporarily change viscosity, so a cold oil may thicken and become fluid again at normal room temperature. The concern is an unexplained or persistent change, especially alongside odor or irritation.
Using an old product
It is better to replace oil that is past a printed date or PAO recommendation. Even if it looks normal, its preservation, oxidation state, and contamination history become less certain with age.
An old product may apply poorly, smell rancid, taste unpleasant, or irritate the lips. Discard it immediately if it was shared during illness, water or saliva was added, the package is damaged, or foreign material is visible.
If you accidentally apply questionable oil once, remove it and stop using the product. One use does not guarantee harm, but seek appropriate medical advice if a significant or persistent reaction develops.

Temperature
Refrigeration is generally unnecessary unless the manufacturer recommends it. Most commercial lip oils are designed for stable room-temperature storage away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light.
Cold temperatures can thicken oils, make waxes or other ingredients crystallize, and create condensation when the package repeatedly moves between the refrigerator and a warm room. Those changes can make application less predictable without meaningfully extending a tested shelf life.
Choose a cool, dry drawer or cabinet instead. If a label specifies a storage range, follow it.
