Can your lip liner be sharpened?
Sharpenable:
- ✓ Wood pencil
- ✓ Plastic pencil that doesn't twist
- ✓ Most gel liners
Do not sharpen:
- ✗ Retractable liner (twists upward)
- ✗ Click-advance pencil
When in doubt: Check if the base twists upward. If additional product appears, it is retractable. If nothing twists, it is sharpenable.
How to identify your liner type
Wood Pencil
What it looks like: Traditional wooden barrel visible
How to sharpen: Insert into cosmetic sharpener, rotate gently until pointed
Best for: Clean, precise sharpening; firmest control
Plastic Pencil
What it looks like: Plastic casing; does not twist at base
How to sharpen: Insert into cosmetic sharpener, rotate slowly; avoid pressure
Best for: Most modern lip liners; common misconception that plastic means retractable
Gel or Cream Pencil
What it looks like: Often plastic with softer, more flexible formula
How to sharpen: Use sharp cosmetic sharpener, rotate gently; consider chilling before sharpening
Best for: Softer formulas that need gentler handling
Retractable Liner
What it looks like: Base twists upward; additional product emerges when twisted
How to sharpen: Do not sharpen. Twist base to advance new product
Best for: Convenience; no sharpener needed
How to sharpen without breaking
Use a cosmetic sharpener
Not a standard office pencil sharpener. Cosmetic sharpeners have larger openings and different blade angles designed for makeup formulas.
Rotate slowly
Gentle rotation reduces breakage, especially with softer gel formulas. Avoid pressing hard or grinding.
Stop when sharp enough
You do not need a needle-sharp point. Stop sharpening as soon as the tip becomes pointed and usable to avoid wasting product.
Keep the blade clean
A dull or product-clogged blade is often why liners break. Wipe the sharpener blade regularly with a tissue.
Why is your liner breaking?
Liner snaps during sharpening
Likely cause: Dull blade, too much pressure, or softer formula
Fix: Clean or replace sharpener blade; rotate instead of pushing; try chilling softer formulas before sharpening
Tip crumbles or smears instead of forming a point
Likely cause: Very soft gel formula or warm environment
Fix: Chill the liner briefly in the fridge; use a very sharp sharpener; rotate very gently
Liner keeps dulling after one or two uses
Likely cause: Pressing too hard during application
Fix: Use a light hand when applying; allow the tip to do the work rather than applying pressure
I cannot get the tip sharp at all
Likely cause: Sharpener blade is dull; liner may actually be retractable
Fix: Replace sharpener blade; confirm the base does not twist upward before sharpening
Special cases
Kylie Lip Liners
Most Kylie liners use plastic pencil packaging but are sharpenable. Rotate gently during sharpening, especially if the formula feels creamy.
Fenty Lip Liners
Many Fenty liners are sharpenable plastic pencils, not retractable. Check if the base twists before sharpening.
Gel or Creamy Formulas
Softer formulas are more prone to breaking. If your liner keeps snapping, try chilling it in the fridge for 10–15 minutes before sharpening, then use very gentle rotation with a sharp blade.
Sharpening Without a Sharpener
A proper cosmetic sharpener is strongly recommended. Improvised methods (knives, office sharpeners, etc.) tend to damage the liner or create uneven tips. If you do not have a sharpener available, it is better to skip sharpening and use the liner with a rounded tip.
